Every winter, people assume the sun is too weak to do anything to their skin. The air is cold, the days are short, and a tan feels like something that belongs to July. But UV radiation does not disappear when the temperature drops. Depending on where you are, how high up you are, and what is on the ground beneath you, winter sun can absolutely stimulate melanin production — and it can absolutely burn you. Here is what the science says about tanning in cold weather.

The warmth you feel from sunlight comes from infrared radiation, not ultraviolet. UV is a completely separate part of the electromagnetic spectrum, and cold air does not filter it out. What does reduce winter UV is the sun's lower angle in the sky — sunlight travels through more atmosphere at a low angle, and that thicker atmospheric path absorbs and scatters more UVB before it reaches the ground.
This is why the UV index drops in winter at mid-to-high latitudes. But "drops" does not mean "disappears." At 35°N and below — think Los Angeles, Seville, Cairo, or Tokyo — winter UV index values of 4–6 at midday are perfectly normal, and that is more than enough to tan.
The problem is at higher latitudes. A landmark study published in Science found that above approximately 35°N, UVB radiation becomes insufficient to produce vitamin D in the skin for much of the winter period. Research from Boston (42°N) showed that virtually no cutaneous vitamin D₃ could be synthesised from November through February, and in Edmonton (52°N) this window stretched from October through March. If UVB is too weak for vitamin D, it is also too weak to drive significant new melanin production — the two processes share the same wavelength range.
Winter UV Index by Location
The single biggest factor in whether you can tan in winter is latitude. Here is how the UV index compares across four cities in their respective winter months:

A UV index of 3 or above is generally considered the threshold where unprotected skin begins to tan noticeably within a reasonable timeframe. Below 3, the UV dose per hour is simply too low — you would need to spend many hours in direct midday sun to accumulate enough exposure, and in winter the sun window is short.
Snow and Altitude: The Winter UV Multipliers
Two environmental factors can dramatically change winter UV exposure: snow cover and elevation.
Snow Reflection
Fresh snow has one of the highest UV albedos of any natural surface. While dry sand reflects roughly 15–20% of UV and water reflects about 10%, fresh powder snow can reflect up to 80–90% of UV radiation. This means UV hits your skin from two directions — directly from above and reflected from below — effectively doubling your dose on exposed areas like the face, underside of the nose, chin, and neck.

A clear day with fresh powder creates what snow scientists call a "bluebird day" — deep blue sky overhead and brilliant white below. These are the conditions that catch skiers and hikers off guard, because the air feels cold but the UV dose is substantial.
Altitude
UV radiation increases by roughly 10–12% for every 1,000 metres of elevation gain. At 3,000 metres — a typical ski resort altitude in the Alps or Rockies — UV intensity is approximately 30–36% higher than at sea level.
Combine altitude with snow reflection and a clear winter sky, and you get UV exposure levels that can rival a summer beach. This is why ski resort workers show elevated rates of solar keratoses and skin cancer in studies — they accumulate heavy UV doses over winter seasons at altitude, often without adequate protection.
The Winter Sunburn Trap
Cold air is deceptive. When the temperature is 5°C or below, your skin does not feel hot, your instinct to seek shade does not kick in, and wind masks the early signs of reddening. By the time you notice a sunburn after a day on the slopes, the damage is already done.
Research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology has found that left-sided skin cancers are more prevalent in drivers in left-hand-drive countries — evidence that chronic, low-level UV exposure accumulates even when you are not aware of it. The same principle applies to winter outdoor activities: the dose is lower per minute, but if you spend a full day at altitude with snow reflection, the cumulative dose can be significant.
Dermatologists recommend applying broad-spectrum SPF 30+ to all exposed skin whenever the UV index is 3 or above, regardless of the season. On the slopes, pay particular attention to the underside of the nose, ears, chin, and neck — areas that catch reflected UV from snow.
Can You Actually Build a Tan in Winter?
The honest answer depends on your location:
Yes, if you are at a latitude below roughly 35°N (or equivalent in the Southern Hemisphere), where winter UV regularly reaches 4–6. Residents of Miami, southern Spain, or northern Australia can maintain a mild tan through winter with regular midday outdoor time, though tanning will be noticeably slower than in summer.
Conditionally, if you are at a mid-latitude (35–45°N) but at high altitude with snow cover. A week of skiing at 2,500 metres on clear days can produce noticeable facial tanning — though it is difficult to tan evenly when most of your body is covered by ski gear.
No, if you are at a high latitude (above 45°N) at low elevation. In cities like London, Berlin, or Stockholm, winter UV is simply too weak to trigger meaningful melanin production. The sun sits too low in the sky, the UVB component is heavily filtered by the atmosphere, and the daylight window is too short.
Winter Tanning Tips for Lower Latitudes
If your winter UV index regularly reaches 3 or above and you want to maintain a gradual tan:
- Target the midday window — UV peaks between 11:00 and 14:00, even in winter
- Start with short sessions of 15–20 minutes and build gradually
- Always wear broad-spectrum sunscreen — SPF 30 minimum
- Hydrate your skin — cold, dry air strips moisture, and dehydrated skin sheds faster, taking your tan with it
- Do not rely on feeling warm — UV intensity has nothing to do with air temperature
