Sunblock referred to mineral (physical) sunscreens — products containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These inorganic particles sit on the skin's surface and interact with UV radiation before it enters the epidermis. For decades, the assumption was that they worked purely as a physical shield, reflecting rays like a mirror. Modern research has refined this: mineral filters primarily absorb UV energy and release it as heat, with only about 5–10% of UV actually reflected or scattered. Why the FDA Killed the Word "Sunblock"

In June 2011, the FDA published a final rule on sunscreen labelling that, among other things, banned the term "sunblock" from product labels entirely. The reasoning was straightforward: no product can literally block all UV radiation, and calling something a "sunblock" implied a level of protection that does not exist. The same rule also banned the terms "waterproof" and "sweatproof" — replaced with the more honest "water resistant (40 minutes)" or "water resistant (80 minutes)."
